Manchester United already have the best possible boost ahead of FA Cup semi-final

Bruno Fernandes returns ahead of the FA Cup semi-final against Brighton on Sunday, to the delight of United.

Manchester United’s co-captain was absent and sorely missed in Thursday’s 3-0 loss in Seville as his teammates failed to score. Not only did they fail to score but failed to create much in general, as the Sevilla goal remained unchallenged.

Once again a Fernandes-less performance from United was totally toothless, panicked and proved to all why the 28-year-old is the most important player in the team.

There was a lot wrong with United’s performance, but one of the key issues was the midfield. Marcel Sabitzer who replaced the suspended Fernandes boasted a troublesome 58% pass completion.

Whether his inclusion would’ve won the game for United or not, Bruno‘s return comes at a key time. Brighton are one of the leagues best teams, so the Portuguese midfielder’s return is a huge boost.

A positive of Fernandes missing Thursdays game is that he got some much needed rest. United’s number eight has been playing three games per week all season rarely getting a break.

Fernandes has started 29/30 league games this season; averaging 90 minutes per game. This has been the same story in the cup competitions too, Fernandes arguably plays too much. Therefore on Sunday we may get a revitalised Fernandes, with new motivation to take his side to another final.

Bruno Fernandes’ incredible form

The Red Devils’ Portuguese magnifico has enjoyed his best season at the club to date so far this year. The former Sporting Lisbon man has an impressive 23 goal contributions to his name (10G, 13A), and has improved his all-round gameplay tenfold.

The numbers don’t really do Fernandes’ importance to the team justice either, he is the glue that holds it all together. As demonstrated against Sevilla, without him United look devoid of any attacking intention and creativity. Fernandes has created a whopping 37 big chances this season, it is hard not to dream of our season if there was a clinical striker up front.

Another reason that Fernandes returning for Sunday is vital, is due to the fact he holds others accountable, he is a true leader. With Harry Maguire as captain, it doesn’t feel right the players don’t seem to hold him in as high regard as they do with Fernandes.

Therefore, for such a pivotal game Fernandes’ return will be probably the deciding factor in this huge game. As United once again head for the Wembley arches in search of more silverware.
