Manchester United youngster Will Fish continues to go from strength-to-strength at Hibernian with Lee Johnson hailing the ‘fantastic’ Premier League loanee.
The 20-year-old centre-half admitted over the weekend – when speaking to the Edinburgh Evening News – that he had little interest in returning to Carrington and continuing his career in United’s reserves.
Fish has had a taste of first-team football north of the border and he has no intention of giving it up.
He arrived at Easter Road with just three senior appearances to his name but has been an ever present under former Sunderland and Bristol City boss Johnson in recent weeks.
Fish started 10 of Hibs’ last 11 Premiership games. He even scored the winner during Saturday‘s 2-1 win over St Mirren.
Is Hibernian loanee Will Fish leaving Manchester United
“He’s been fantastic,” Johnson beams, in conversation with the BBC. “I’ve said before, if you could build a centre-half, you’d build Will Fish.
“He’s a great student and a great lad. He’s had to up his gravitas levels for this league and his on-pitch personalities.
“(Fish is) a lad that had never played a league game so far in his career. He went to Stockport last year and hardly played a game, so it’s a big step for him. And one that he has really taken to well.
“He’s trusted by the boys, trusted by the staff. (That) is a great sign.”
According to Football Scotland, Hibernian would jump at the chance to sign Fish on a permanent basis.
The Manchester-born 20-year-old, who has captained United at youth level, is highly regarded behind the scenes at Old Trafford. But with Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and co all ahead of him in Erik ten Hag’s pecking order – and with United expected to bring in another centre-half this summer too – it may be decided that Fish is better off carving out a career for himself away from his hometown club.
