David de Gea made a big mistake at the weekend as Manchester United lost 1-0 to West Ham.
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is under scrutiny after a high profile mistake in the defeat to West Ham at the weekend.
It was a stark contrast to the home win over West Ham earlier in the season where De Gea was terrific in keeping a clean sheet.
Amid all the criticism, De Gea is at a low ebb, with United supporters unhappy amid reports via The Telegraph he is set to sign a new deal.
Michail Antonio comments on David de Gea
West Ham forward Michail Antonio has been speaking to the Footballer’s Football Podcast about their win over Manchester United.
He made a point to say he did not want to join the De Gea pile-on, instead saying he simply feels sorry for him.
And that may be worse. It says a lot about where the goalkeeper is right now.
Antonio said: ‘I can’t slate the man. I don’t want to slate the man, but De Gea has to do better.
“He’s such a keeper but he just has these moments. I feel so bad for the guy because he was up there with one of the best keepers in the world.
‘But even though he is up there, he still has these crazy moments. The goal was so slow, I was like “oh, he’s just going to collect this”.’
Earlier in the season, Antonio had nothing but praise for De Gea, who had denied him getting on the scoresheet.
He said at the time: “De Gea, over the last few years, playing against him, he has pulled out some worldies against me. There’s a few games where he has done this to me and he’s really annoying me, not going to lie!”
Right now the optimism around De Gea has dried up, with Manchester United fans feeling they are watching a repeat of previous seasons where the campaign has fallen away late.
We just have to hope United have enough to get over the line.
