Paul Scholes has picked out two Manchester United players he views as crucial to Erik ten Hag’s turnaround at the club.
It might not seem like Manchester United have a lot to smile about right now, coming off a weekend where City clinched a treble, a week after beating the Red Devils in the FA Cup final.
But you have to try and set that aside, and appreciate that the two clubs are on very separate phases, with United in year one under Erik ten Hag, and Pep Guardiola now seven seasons in at City.
The first season under Ten Hag has been pretty bright overall, with United finishing third in the table after scraping sixth the previous year – and winning the Carabao Cup too.

Paul Scholes on Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez
Speaking to Manchester United’s club website, Paul Scholes believes there are two players who stand out as key to the team’s improvement.
Scholes picked out Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez, two summer signings a year ago, who have raised standards and driven the team on.
He believes the duo have had a positive impact on their teammates and played a crucial role in improving results.
He said: “I think for two or three years at least, this team has been accused of lacking leaders. I think there are some leaders in the team.”
“When you think about Casemiro’s experience, Martinez is a great character, he has personality and experience. I think that all changed a bit.”
“They also believe in themselves. I don’t think, you know, that they don’t dominate matches as much as they would like, but they found a way to win and that’s the most important thing.”
It has been a joy to watch both players, and it was just a shame Martinez suffered a broken metatarsal which ruled him out of the final few weeks of the season.
United did secure a top four place, a spot in next season’s Champions League, and have a strong platform from which to build on.
With Casemiro and Martinez in the team, United always have a chance, and Ten Hag will be looking to add more strong characters to the side this summer.
