'They are convinced': Romano says Man United think 60m star will be 'special'

Manchester United feel that have unearthed a potentially ‘special’ talent in Rasmus Hojlund as the Premier League giants remain hot on the heels of the Atalanta striker.

The trial may have grown a little cold recently; a deal to bring the Denmark international to Old Trafford placed on the backburner for the time being as Erik ten Hag and co focus all their efforts on Mason Mount.

But with the Manchester United bosses seemingly accepting defeat in their pursuit of a Harry Kane or a Victor Osimhen, Rasmus Hojlund appears to be at the very top of the club’s ‘B-list’ options.

Put it this way, if Harry Kane is United’s Leo di Caprio, then Rasmus Hojlund is their Cillian Murphy. What the 20-year-old lacks in sheer starpower, he makes up for in watchability.

Hojlund’s combination of speed, power and finesse makes him a fearsome presence for opposition defenders; the former Sturm Graz forward scoring 20 goals for club and country during an outstanding breakthrough campaign in 2022/23. A centre-forward of his anticipation and raw potential, meanwhile, should thrive alongside the creative talents of Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho and co.

Manchester United are big Rasmus Hojlund fans

“(Manchester United) really appreciate him,” Romano tells Give Me Sport.

“They see a great potential in the player. Especially the board. They are convinced that he’s going to be something special in the future.”

By ‘the board’, we can assume Romano is referring to John Murtough and Richard Arnold. While the subject of much online criticism, Man United’s director of football and CEO have displayed far more ‘footballing intelligence’ than their Old Trafford predecessors.

As outlined excellently by the United Muppetiers, much of the frustration levelled at Murtough and Arnold – both of whom played such a key role in the appointment of Ten Hag – should instead by directed towards the true ringmasters of the Old Trafford circus, Joel and Avram Glazer.

Hojlund, meanwhile, is not quite the finished article like a Kane or an Osimhen. But he offers the kind of mouth-watering raw ingredients that a Michelin star cook like Ten Hag could turn into something very tasty indeed.

Some have suggested that Atalanta – who’s head of recruitment Lee Congerton extracted £80 million from United for Harry Maguire – were demanding a fee of nearly 100 million euros for Hojlund.

Romano, however, believes £50 or £60 million could still be enough.
