Top Manchester United transfer target's comments on his best position: How it impacts Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United are weighing up a move for Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount. How will he fit in?

The Mail reported last week that Manchester United are set to bid for England international Mason Mount, while The Telegraph claim personal terms have been agreed already.

Erik ten Hag is a long-term admirer of Mason Mount and will have a plan to utilise Mount in his squad.

Here is a look at how Mount will fit into Manchester United’s midfield.

Mason Mount comments on his best position

Mason Mount spoke in 2020 to Chelsea’s website about his favoured role.

He said: “I’ve played midfield my whole life. I’ve varied between playing a bit more forward in a No.10 position but I always kind of see myself as a No.8.

“I’ve definitely got a range of longer passing in my locker and you can bring that out more when you’re playing in that deeper No.8 position. I do like that [central] role. It allows me to build up play with the ball and also get forward and join the attack.”

Mount has most frequently been played as a 10 for Chelsea and England. Erik ten Hag could give him the opportunity to feature more in his favoured role.

Impact on Bruno Fernandes

If Mason Mount is utilised as an eight, it won’t necessarily disrupt Bruno Fernandes from his current role. Mount’s creativity does mean some of the pressure will be off – although Christian Eriksen has helped with this in 2022/23.

Fernandes impressed in early April in a deeper role while Eriksen was out injured, so Erik ten Hag will have a choice if he wants.

Mount could be deployed further forward and Fernandes deeper. Or United could look to balance it out, with Casemiro holding, and Fernandes and Mount both playing as 8’s alongside him.

Impact on Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen may feel the biggest impact of Mason Mount’s potential arrival. He is the most likely to be replaced in the starting XI.

That’s not a bad thing. Despite his injury, Eriksen has played 38 games for Manchester United this season. The club need to ease reliance on him and bring the age of the midfield down.

Mount is seven years younger and can lighten the load on Eriksen, helping the Dane’s output grow in terms of quality when he does play.
