Real Betis are reportedly confident that Manchester United will let Eric Bailly leave for free with the Premier League misfit seemingly not part of Erik ten Hag’s plans at Old Trafford.
It’s a common criticism that has followed the Red Devils around like a black cloud on a Manchester morning.
Why do the Manchester United seem entirely incapable of bringing in sizeable transfer fees for departing players? It’s a damning indictment of United’s squad management that David Beckham remains the club’s fourth-biggest sale of all time, 20 years on from his £25 million move to Real Madrid.
Dean Henderson, meanwhile, could reportedly join Nottingham Forest for £4 million less than Burnley are paying bitter rivals Man City for a player who spent last season on loan in England’s third tier (The Athletic).
Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Marcos Rojo, Alexis Sanchez, Ander Herrera and more were all shipped out for nothing too, and Eric Bailly – a £30 million signing from Villarreal back in 2016 – could soon become the latest in a long line of players to leave Old Trafford on free transfers.
Eric Bailly on his way out of Manchester United
According to Spanish publication AS, Real Betis hope to bring Bailly back to La Liga.
Sporting director Ramon Planes is reportedly ‘confident’ that, not only will Man United let Bailly go for free, they will also stump up a sizeable portion of his £80,000-a-week contract during the Ivorian’s debut season at the Estadio Benito Villamarin (Spotrac).
Bailly spent last season on loan at Marseille. He started only five Ligue 1 games, however; L’OM unsurprisingly opting against triggering the £5 million option-to-buy clause in his contract, per Fabrizio Romano.
Back to La Liga
Real Betis could now come to Bailly’s rescue. Manuel Pellegrini’s side have carved out a reputation for themselves as a club willing to revive stalling careers. And the hope will be that Bailly can emulate the success of Nabil Fekir, Hector Bellerin, Ayoze Perez, Claudio Bravo and one-time Real Madrid starlet Sergio Canales, as long as he can stay clear of the injuries which have dogged his Premier League career.
Bailly is well down the pecking order at Old Trafford these days.
He could yet fall even further; Romano reporting that Ten Hag has ‘approved’ a potential deal for Monaco defender Axel Disasi.
