Star released by Manchester United is emerging as one of Europe's best talents and we all saw it coming

Angel Gomes is absolutely smashing it at the moment, which leads us to believe that Manchester United were in the wrong to let him go so early.

Angel Gomes left United in 2020. The young English midfielder left as he believed there was a lack of first-team opportunities. Quite frankly, he was right.

LOSC Lille in the Ligue 1 were quick to secure his signature and he’s been absolutely smashing it ever since.

Most recently for England’s Under 21 side – where he produced an absolute midfield masterclass last night.

Angel Gomes produces a masterclass against Portugal

Gomes and Liverpool’s Curtis Jones played in a double pivot against Portugal and absolutely ran the show. For players at such a young age, they are so composed on the ball.

The term ‘deep-lying playmaker’ comes to mind – which, funnily enough, is exactly what Manchester United have needed for some time now.

Casemiro is a good asset at breaking up play, but in terms of transitioning from defence to attack, he’s not quite there. Gomes is showing clear signs of excelling in the role. Just check out this highlight reel from last night’s game.

The sad thing is, a lot of fans were certain that Gomes was going straight to the top. As every game passes – this looks more and more apparent.

He was always regarded as one of the hottest prospects in the academy, but for some reason got very little game time for the first-team.

Why did Manchester United sell Angel Gomes?

Ultimately – it was Gomes who wanted to leave, but why didn’t Man United push to keep him?

A lot was said about his height and physicality, and whether he’d be able to hack the boisterous nature of the Premier League.

But as players have proven time and time again, if you have the technical ability, you can roll with the big dogs.

It’s good to see Gomes doing well. We just wish it was in a red jersey.
