Manchester United have made decision over £33m midfield transfer target

Manchester United have decided against a move for Amadou Onana and will focus on Sofyan Amrabat.

Manchester United are expected to launch a long-awaited move for Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat imminently, report The Mail.

United have been waiting on player sales, and several appear to be in the works. TMW report Fiorentina expect United to step up negotiations next week.

The decision to focus on Morocco midfielder Amrabat comes after United explored a possible move for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Manchester United decide against second Onana

Manchester United had taken a look at signing Everton midfielder Amadou Onana. The Belgian international had impressed in games against the Red Devils last season.

Everton signed Onana for £33 million last summer and he was a bright spark in a forgettable campaign for the club.

United have taken the view Onana would be too expensive. Everton would want to make a profit, and he is just one year into a long term deal.

On the other hand, Sofyan Amrabat has only one year remaining on his contract at Fiorentina.

This has set up his relatively cheap price, expected to be no more than £30 million.  Alfredo Pedulla has reported a fee could be as low as between £19 million and £21.5 million.

Ready-made option

While Amadou Onana is younger and has one year Premier League experience, he would still be regarded as a ‘project’ for manager Erik ten Hag.

Sofyan Amrabat would be a ready-made option to plug into United’s midfield, and at 26, is a good age, who Erik ten Hag has worked with previously at Utrecht.

Onana is a player worth keeping an eye on, but a move for Amrabat makes a lot of sense, especially when you hope United may be saving a little money for another striker late in the window.
