Sergio Ramos now lined up as alternative to Manchester United man

The legendary Sergio Ramos could now be on his way to Besiktas after the Turkish giants seemingly missed out on a deal to sign Manchester United’s Premier League misfit Eric Bailly.

With Fabrizio Romano reporting a few days ago that Besiktas’ pursuit of Eric Bailly was ‘stalling’, there is one person at the Vodafone Arena who may have been wondering if the Super Lig challengers had dodged a bullet.

Besiktas head coach Senol Gunes, just last week, expressed his concerns about bringing in another centre-half who would miss a portion of the campaign due to the 2024 edition of the African Cup of Nations.

Gunes could already be without Omar Colley and Daniel Amartey for much of the winter. Bailly, meanwhile, remains a regular for the Ivory Coast, if not for Manchester United.

The Besiktas boss certainly would not have the same concerns should Sergio Ramos – the former Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Sevilla and Spain colossus – arrive to take the place that had initially been reserved for Bailly.

Fotomac believe that Ramos, now a free-agent after leaving PSG, could be about to choose between Besiktas and their Istanbul neighbours Galatasaray.

And while Gunes did not give much away when asked about the Real Madrid legend, he did point out that Besiktas have enjoyed some success when bringing in another Los Blancos icon.

“I don’t know about Ramos. I don’t know his latest status,” Gunes tells Sporx. “(But) he is a player who has proven himself. Pepe came to us before.

“It’s not right for me to say anything. We’ll talk when it happens.”

Ten Hag needs sales

Manchester United still hope to cash in on the likes of Donny Van de Beek this month; Erik ten Hag looking to free up funds for Sofyan Amrabat and potentially another forward.

Bailly, according to RMC Sport, will be allowed to leave for free – but getting his wages off the books would still be a boost.

There remains interest from Fulham and Saudi Arabia, even if a move to Besiktas feels increasingly unlikely at this stage.
