Verdict on £47m star's five-year spell at Manchester United as exit confirmed

Brazilian midfielder Fred is expected to confirm his departure from Manchester United soon after Fenerbahce agreed a fee with United for the 30-year-old midfielder.

The former Shakhtar midfielder has his medical booked for this weekend ahead of completing his move to the Turkish giants according to Fabrizio Romano. The club has confirmed his exit, pending personal terms and international clearance.

The fee is believed to be around £8 million plus an additional £4 million in add-ons for the United midfielder and this may well be the catalyst to Erik ten Hag’s side signing Sofyan Amrabat.

The midfielder will always be remembered for his commitment to United and his passion on the pitch and, particularly last season, his goalscoring abilities.

A player you can rely on

Despite the frustrations over the midfielder’s ability, the Brazilian was always a player you could rely on.

He was very rarely injured and when he did play, apart from a few shocking performances, the midfielder was always at least a 6/10, which is what you need from a squad player.

The marriage of convenience the midfielder formed with Scotsman Scott McTominay may well have dampened his reputation. The pair were always subject to abuse no matter how they played, so Fred’s reputation always took a hit because of this.

Was he worth the fee

During the midfielder’s first season in England, the Brazilian seriously struggled to settle into life in Manchester. The lack of physical strength he possessed compared to rival midfielders meant he would often be bulldozed off the ball.

But after that season, the midfielder began to bulk up and use his slight physique to his advantage. The midfielder excelled at the Etihad under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as United won 2-1 in 2019. From then on, the Brazilian became an ultra-reliable big game player.

Even during this season, when the midfielder was oftentimes partnered with Casemiro, the 30-year-old performed at his best during the big occasions.

A superb equaliser against Barcelona set them on their way to knocking out the Spanish side, and the midfielder became a goalscoring asset. The Brazilian scored six goals and provided six assists for ten Hag’s side.

He departs United as ultimately being a success for what he offered the Red Devils in the middle of the park and will be fondly remembered in a few years’ time.
