Report: Manchester United consider deal to sign 28-year-old free agent who attended Arsenal defeat

Manchester United are now weighing up a shock deal to sign free agent winger Anwar El Ghazi amid problems out wide.

United must feel cursed when it comes to wingers at this point.

The Mason Greenwood situation was well-documented, as is Antony’s current absence from the United setup.

Jadon Sancho has been in Erik ten Hag’s bad books having fired back at the United boss for leaving him out against Arsenal.

United do still have the likes of Facundo Pellistri and Alejandro Garnacho, whilst Amad Diallo will hopefully return from injury soon enough.

United are now considering a free agent move though, seemingly looking to add some experience out wide.

Manchester United consider Anwar El Ghazi deal

United fans will be stunned tonight as the Daily Mail report that a deal for Anwar El Ghazi is now under consideration.

It’s stated that United are ‘weighing up’ a move to sign El Ghazi, who can sign outside of the transfer window as a free agent.

The 28-year-old left PSV Eindhoven by mutual consent before the transfer deadline and can now join a new club for nothing.

El Ghazi is thought to have offers in Saudi Arabia but United are now considering offering him a Premier League return.

Intriguingly, El Ghazi was at the Emirates Stadium to watch United lose 3-1 to Arsenal before the international break.

Nobody could have really expected a United deal after that, but Ten Hag could make his move in the coming days.

Who is United target El Ghazi?

El Ghazi spent time with hometown club BVV Barendrecht before moving on to Feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam and then Ajax.

Amsterdam is where El Ghazi started to emerge, bagging 23 goals in 100 games for Ajax before joining Lille in January 2017.

Six goals in 44 games there wasn’t a great return though and El Ghazi was farmed out on loan to Aston Villa in a deal which eventually became permanent.

El Ghazi helped Villa win promotion to the Premier League and did have a 10-goal campaign in the 2020-21 season.

Villa loaned El Ghazi out to Everton in January 2022, but he made just two appearances in a miserable time at Goodison Park.

A Netherlands international with two caps to his name, El Ghazi returned to his homeland last year and scored nine goals in 31 games for PSV.

An experienced wide man who can operate on either flank, El Ghazi would be a rather underwhelming United signing; almost reminiscent of Wout Weghorst or Odion Ighalo.

Ten Hag may feel that it’s a move he simply has to make though amid problems out wide, with El Ghazi potentially in line to answer the SOS.
