'There has been criticism': Ex-teammate praises 25-year-old's Manchester United move after fan issues

Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has been praised having dealt with plenty of criticism during his time at Fenerbahce.

United probably knew that another goalkeeper was needed even when Andre Onana arrived from Inter.

Dean Henderson always looked likely to leave the club and, sure enough, he secured himself a big move to Crystal Palace.

That meant United had to bring in a new backup goalkeeper to support Onana this season and beyond.

United were linked with the likes of Odysseas Vlachodimos from Benfica, but ended up choosing Altay Bayindir as the new man.

Altay Bayindir a bargain signing for Manchester United

Bayindir arrives with a decent CV.

Only 25, Bayindir is a huge goalkeeper at 6ft 6in tall and has plenty of experience under his belt.

Nearly 150 appearances for Fenerbahce is impressive for a 25-year-old goalkeeper, whilst Bayindir even has five Turkey caps to his name.

Bayindir may never really push to overtake Onana in the United pecking order but he will offer vital competition.

Onana could head to the Africa Cup of Nations in January, so having somebody who can step in – like Bayindir – is crucial.

United didn’t want to spend too much on a backup stopper, so £4.3million for Bayindir seems like a bargain.

Bayindir praised after Fenerbahce criticism

Bayindir may have played a lot of games for Fenerbahce, but he didn’t have it easy.

Fenerbahce fans regularly slammed Bayindir on social media and Serdar Dursun has now opened up on the situation.

Dursun, a Turkish international striker, spent two years playing alongside Bayindir at Fenerbahce before recently leaving for Fatih Karagumruk.

Dursun has told Milliyet that players become ‘very affected’ by social media criticism and Bayindir is no different.

The striker believes Bayindir may have simply had enough of the criticism and has now decided to move on.

Dursun adds that, whilst fans have slammed him over the years, Bayindir’s move to Manchester United proves that he is a good goalkeeper and ultimately better than Fenerbahce fans think.

“Altay is also a very good kid,” said Dursun. “Despite his young age, he succeeded in becoming the captain of Fenerbahçe. After the emergence of social media, the players are very affected by the comments. There has been criticism against Altay in recent years. He was taking lessons mentally, but after a while you can’t handle it. If a club like Manchester United wants you, you must be a good goalkeeper,” he added.
