Brazilian press claim Manchester United lined up move for Palmeiras midfielder

Manchester United reportedly agreed an £8 million deal with Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Menino in the summer but the deal collapsed at the eleventh hour.

Sofyan Amrabat was the midfielder Manchester United signed in the end but it is being claimed by Premier League Brazil, that Palmeiras player Gabriel Menino was another target.

It is claimed an offer made by Erik ten Hag’s side had even been accepted by club president Leila Pereira, too. However, United ended up prioritising funds elsewhere.

United eventually moved for one of the stars of the 2022 World Cup in Amrabat on an initial loan deal from Fiorentina which included an option to buy next summer.

Manchester United targeted Gabriel Menino

According to the report from Premier League Brasil, United had the deal in place for Gabriel Menino, and a number of factors were cited for the deal not going ahead.

The report reports United’s need for goalkeeping options, the unprecedented situations with Antony, as well as the search for left-back cover following Luke Shaw’s injury as the reasoning behind the deal being put on the back burner.

Interestingly, the midfielder has reportedly recently coming in for some criticism at Palmeiras over his performances but, according to the report, Ten Hag liked what he saw from the versatile Brazilian.

United impressed by Menino

The report goes on to say that United’s analysts were impressed with the 23-year-old and were firmly behind the signing.

Menino was reportedly set to feature at full-back in Ten Hag’s system and then drift infield, sort of what Amrabat had been doing due to the number of injury issues in that area.

However, a deal is seemingly unlikely to be resurrected in January due to the midfielder’s poor performances and it would take months of ‘exceptional’ performances for the Red Devils to consider Menino again.

United seem to have a bizarre reticence about making purchases in January anyway, so this deal will be firmly put into the category of what could have been.
