Man United's potential £35m Eriksen replacement has 13 G/A in just 18 games

Sebastian Szymanski scored a fine goal for Poland just one day after the Fenerbahce star’s agent broke his silence on rumours linking the midfielder with a big-money move to Manchester United.

If you thought this rumour was a little out of outfield, the mere fact that Sebastian Szymanski spent last season on loan at Feyenoord – winning the Eredivisie title under Arne Slot – should clear things up a little.

Szymanski is, after all, the latest in a long line of players who appear to have earned a place on Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag’s wishlist after catching the eye in the Netherlands.

If the 24-year-old was impressive at Feyenoord, however, he has been closer to imperious at Fenerbahce. With nine goals and four assists in his last 18 games for club and country, Szymanski is a footballer at the peak of his powers and in the form of his life.

The Faroe Islands really should have seen this coming, then, when they gave the Fenerbahce playmaker time and space to line up one of those trademark shots from the edge of the penalty area on Thursday night, Szymanski opening the scoring just four minutes after kick-off.

Manchester United linked with Poland star

“I am glad that I managed to translate my achievements from the club into the national team,” Szymanski – who has struck up a fearsome understanding with former United star Fred in Turkey and has been labelled a ’quality player’ by Napoli’s Piotr Zielinski – tells Sport.

“The club’s good form certainly helps the national team.”

It remains to be seen, however, if there is any truth in the claims – made by Polish reporter Jaroslaw Kolinski – that Szymanski could be on his way to Manchester United in 2024.

“I don’t engage in gossip. I prefer to operate on facts. The news is that Seb has only been in his new club for three months and everyone is crazy about him,” agent Mariusz Piekarski tells Przeglad Sportowy,.

“He would like to succeed there, reach the Champions League. He didn’t manage to play (in the UCL) with Feyenoord, but maybe he will with Fenerbahce.

“For the club, the number one goal is to regain the Turkish championship. It is said that Fener could get 30 to 40 million euros for Szymanski today but I think that, at the moment, he is a priceless player for them.”

Christian Eriksen’s replacement?

Much has been made of United’s need for a long-term Casemiro replacement. Szymanski, however, may have been lined up with Christian Eriksen’s age in mind.

Szymanski, interestingly, was a target to replace Eriksen at Brentford back in 2022.
