Rio Ferdinand names the best finisher he has ever played with at Man United

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has lifted the lid on who he believes to be the best finisher if ever played with at Old Trafford.

Rio Ferdinand, who joined Manchester United in 2002, played with a fair few world-class strikers in his time.

After spending 12 years at the club, he has played alongside Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, among others.

The English defender has given his verdict on who he believes to be the best and the answer may not surprise you.

Ferdinand’s verdict

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the former defender, speaking to the United website, named Van Nistelrooy as the best finisher he had ever played with.

“Ruud for me,” Ferdinand said when asked who was the best finisher. “I think all the other strikers (he’s played with) would agree with that, as well.

“Ole is up there, he was a thinking finisher. His finishes were always calm and he was great at instinctive things but I have to go with Ruud.

“He was clinical and the most ruthless finisher I’ve played with.”

Ruud’s impact

The Dutch forward was sensational for the Red Devils. In the Premier League alone, the forward scored 95 goals in 150 appearances in the league and claimed one golden boot during his time in England.

Van Nistelrooy departed the club in the summer of 2006 after a glittering period in a Red Devils shirt and it’s hard to disagree with the defender’s verdict.

The 47-year-old had recently managed PSV but decided to part company with the Dutch side, despite doing so well in the Eredivisie and winning the KNVB Cup, amid a reported lack of support.

The hope from United fans will be that the club’s newest forward Rasmus Hojlund could be the man to replicate the Dutchman’s goalscoring prowess in the Premier League.
