Sporting director exit announced after claims INEOS want him at Manchester United

Monaco have confirmed the departure of sporting director Paul Mitchell amid lingering links with a move to Manchester United.

United could still stand to add an experienced transfer market operator either ahead of January or in 2024.

Matt Hargreaves came in as United’s director of football negotiations over the summer having previously been an Adidas executive.

United still don’t have a recognised sporting director though, somebody who has history of working in the transfer market with a number of clubs.

One name has been linked with United in recent times though – and he is officially available…

Monaco have now confirmed the departure of their sporting director Paul Mitchell.

This has been coming for a while; Mitchell announced his intention to leave Monaco in March of this year.

With the summer transfer window now done and dusted, Mitchell has officially left Monaco after more than three years with the club.

Stalybridge-born Mitchell has been linked with United for some time and his availability may garner some interest inside Old Trafford.

The Athletic suggested in April 2022 that Ralf Rangnick has endorsed Mitchell to the United hierarchy.

Mitchell and Rangnick worked together in the RB Leipzig setup and he was backed for a big move to United.

The Independent added in March of this year that INEOS had earmarked Mitchell for a major role at United if they completed a takeover.

That hasn’t happened as of right now but INEOS may still be eyeing Mitchell to lead United’s transfer business.

Who did Mitchell sign and sell at Monaco?

There are a number of success stories from Mitchell’s time at Monaco, starting with the signing of Axel Disasi.

Disasi was signed for just £12million from Reims in 2020 but was sold to Chelsea for a huge £38million.

Caio Henrique has become a star for Monaco at left back whilst Breel Embolo and Mohamed Camara have impressed since signing in 2022.

The last transfer window as impressive too with Monaco landing the likes of Wilfried Singh, Denis Zakaria and Folarin Balogun.

Mitchell has also overseen major sales like Aurelien Tchouameni, Benoit Badiashile and Sofiane Diop, helping Monaco balance the books.

Mitchell will be an appealing candidate for United, but much may depend on whether INEOS end up securing a takeover down the line.
