Manchester United fans have ruthlessly slammed “hopeless” Antony after the Red Devils winger’s disappointing performance against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening.
Antony has come under heavy criticism ever since United splashed out a hefty £80.75m transfer fee, plus a further £4.25m in add-ons, to sign him from Erik ten Hag’s former side Ajax in 2022.
Despite facing fierce criticism at United, Ten Hag has kept faith in the former Ajax star and Antony has faced a tough task in silencing his critics so far.
Antony has made 10 appearances for United across all competitions this season, but the Brazilian winger has failed to register an assist or score once for his side.
The 23-year-old United star was even blasted for his on-field actions in the 3-0 defeat to crosstown rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday.

United fans react to Antony’s performance vs Newcastle
United fans took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, and launched a scathing attack on Antony over his subpar display against Newcastle.
“Antony is living proof that everyone needs to be a little bit self-deprecating,” one fan said.
Someone else commented: “How does a professional footballer only have one foot? If Antony was able to use his right foot, he could be half-decent.”
Another added: “Antony has to be one of the worst transfers in the history of football.”
“I honestly think I’d genuinely prefer Dan James over Antony right now,” a fourth posted.
While a fifth user wrote: “Antony is such a hopeless footballer. Literally does nothing positive.”
And a sixth fan tweeted: “I need to watch Antony when he was at Ajax and see something because I don’t know why we got him. And I’m trying really hard.”
One simply asked: “What is the point of Antony?”
Ten Hag needs to address Antony situation
Ten Hag’s woes at United have piled on this season and Antony is a serious conundrum that the former Ajax boss needs to address going forward.
However, United are short of right wingers to challenge Antony for a place in the starting XI, especially after Jadon Sancho’s exclusion from the first team.
It might be time for Ten Hag to experiment and deploy either Facundo Pellistri or Alejandro Garnacho out on the right wing and withdraw Antony for the time being.
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville aimed his criticism at Antony over his body language on the bench during the Manchester derby, saying that he “doesn’t look happy.”
Antony will face further criticism after the Carabao Cup defeat against Newcastle, but Ten Hag might have to drop him and protect him from criticism for the next couple of weeks.
