Erik ten Hag backs £55 million ace to perform, he has a big point to prove this season

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has had his say on a forgotten midfielder who has yet to make an impact since his move to Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United have been busy in the transfer market with the Red Devils completing the signing of French defender Leny Yoro and Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee.

A new midfielder is now reportedly one of the Red Devils’ priority with United ‘closing in’ on a deal to sign Paris Saint-Germain Manuel Ugarte.

Another midfield signing is certainly necessary but one of the club’s previous midfield signing in Mason Mount, has certainly not made the impact expected of him since moving to Chelsea.

Ten Hag backs Mount to perform

United began their pre-season preparation with a defeat to Rosenberg before a 2-0 victory over Scottish giants Rangers.

Mount featured in both games for the Red Devils and looked promising during the victory over Philippe Clement’s side.

The Dutchman has been speaking to the media ahead of United’s opening game of the US tour against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

“You can’t judge his season, because he was injured,” Ten Hag said. “Don’t judge him. But when he is fit he will be a very good player for us and we can use him, versatile.

“You need certain types in the squad, team players, multifunctional players – he is one of the players who can play in several positions, he will help the team.”

Big season ahead at United for mount

Brought to Old Trafford for £60 million last summer, Mount’s debut season was blighted by injury problems but his second season has to improve.

The midfielder scored just one goal last season, a late goal against Brentford during the 1-1 draw against Thomas Frank’s side.

Mount has a chance to prove himself against Arsenal and set himself up for a key season at Old Trafford.

Both clubs are missing key players ahead of the game in Los Angeles after their recent international commitments, but the Red Devils will be aiming to claim bragging rights ahead of the new Premier League season.
