Andy Cole singles out Man Utd legend who had ‘unique personality’ under Sir Alex Ferguson, he respected him

Andy Cole has spoken highly about one Manchester United legend after playing alongside him during his time at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 52-year-old former Manchester United striker enjoyed a prolific playing spell at the Red Devils after his move from Newcastle in 1995.

Andy Cole lifted five Premier League titles, a Champions League and two FA Cups under legendary former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The United legend made 275 appearances for the Red Devils and scored an impressive 121 times, with Cole leaving a long-lasting mark at Old Trafford.

Cole was widely revered for his deadly strike partnership with fellow United legend Dwight Yorke, who arrived at Old Trafford from Aston Villa in 1998.

Dwight Yorke linked up superbly well with Cole during his time at United and the pair established an effective partnership for Ferguson’s treble-winning team in 1999.

Cole raves about Man Utd legend

Speaking to the World Football Index, Andy Cole insisted that his partnership with Dwight Yorke was “natural” and the pair were “in sync” at Manchester United.

The former England striker added that Yorke was a “unique personality” due to the impact he would have on the pitch and in the United dressing room.

Yorke, much like Cole, enjoyed a prolific spell under Sir Alex Ferguson and lifted three Premier League titles, a Champions League and an FA Cup with United.

The 52-year-old former United striker scored 66 times in 152 appearances for the Red Devils before his departure from Old Trafford in 2002.

“I would 100 per cent agree that it was a natural partnership because I knew where Yorkie would be and he knew where I would be. We played like we were in sync,” Cole said.

“The great thing with Yorkie is that we always had a laugh off the field together but as soon as it was time to play a game then we would go into a different mindset.

“Just as I said with Eric, I enjoyed playing with him and we got on well straight away as he came into Manchester United from Aston Villa so like me, he was brought into the club rather than being someone who was already there for years prior to me signing.

“Every dressing room has big egos but Yorkie had a unique personality in the sense that he could have a laugh and a joke with anyone and cut any tense atmosphere that we may have had before a big game.

“You need players and personalities like that when you have so many winners in a dressing room with big egos so Yorkie was very good for me as a striker partner, for the team on the pitch but also for the dressing room as a whole.”

Cole on his goalscoring record

Cole is currently fourth in the Premier League all-time leading scorers, with the United legend finding the back of the net a whopping 187 times.

The former United star suggested that his “determination” was a key factor that allowed him to score as many times as he did in his career.

“Oh, man, that is a very tough question,” Cole said.

“I would say that it was a determination to just keep running into dangerous areas time and time again.

“You know, even if I missed a good opportunity, my mindset was just to keep running into the penalty area for the next opportunity because if you keep going in there you’re going to score more opportunities than you miss.

“As a striker, you are always going to get a little bit of flack if you miss a chance but thankfully, that was not the case too often for me.”
