There has been a noticeable shift in Manchester United’s transfer business during their first window under Ineos.
The Red Devils had become synonymous with reckless over-spending under the Glazers.
Deals for stars such as Radamel Falcao, Angel Di Maria and Paul Pogba all backfired, and there never seemed to be a strategy or long-term plan going into transfer windows.
But since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s $1.3billion takeover at Old Trafford, Ineos put a focus on hiring the right people in the right positions and it is already having an effect in the transfer window.
With Manuel Ugarte undergoing a medical, United are set to complete their fifth signing of the summer which will take the total spend to just shy of £200million.
But United’s sales have vastly improved with Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox taking charge of negotiations.
Scott McTominay is set to join Napoli for £25million while Mason Greenwood departed for £26million – both feature in United’s biggest sales of all time.
Rio Ferdinand uses one word to describe summer window
United have ticked every box they needed to ahead of deadline day. Joshua Zirkzee joined to solve the striker issue, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui added depth and quality at the back, and Ugarte is set to join to replace Casemiro and partner Kobbie Mainoo.
There are not many United fans who will be unhappy with the club’s business this summer, and United legend Rio Ferdinand has summed it up in one word.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, he said “You’ve got to look at what is going on at the football club. I think the business that has been done at the moment has been very sensible.
“I think I’ve used that word a lot in this window – sensible. I think it’s been good.
“You look at the replacement for Scott McTominay, he [Ugarte] is a 23-year-old, Scott is 27, so that is great. He was our primary defensive midfield target from the start of the window, and so he’s going to be here for a long time now.
“If you contrast that to previous windows, we’ve been spending far, far, far too much money on players. Over the odds. Spending too much on players and giving them too much in terms of wages.”
A ‘sensible’ summer window
Sensible is a great way to sum up United’s summer.
The new ownership have not rushed into any deals over been forced to pay over the price for any targets.

Everton played hard-ball over Jarrad Branthwaite but instead of folding, United turned their sights to Yoro and De Ligt and signed both.
Every signing that has arrived is young, hungry and fits into Erik ten Hag’s system. There is a clear vision from the bottom of the club right to the top and that is more than can be said about previous windows.
