Manchester United had three different goalscorers against Leicester City but Joshua Zirkzee was not one of them.
There was an emphatic response from Manchester United players on Wednesday evening following Erik ten Hag being sacked.
The Red Devils put on an attacking masterclass and beat top-flight Leicester City 5-2 at Old Trafford to book their spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes scored twice while Alejandro Garnacho also added his name to the scoresheet as United players finally rediscovered their shooting boots.
Interim United manager Ruud van Nistelrooy took charge of the side and there were goals galore under the legendary striker.
The Dutchman made four changes to Ten Hag’s last lineup that lost 2-1 to West Ham, including a change up top with Joshua Zirkzee given the nod to lead the line.
Joshua Zirkzee display vs Leicester City
Since returning from his injury, Rasmus Hojlund has been the first-choice striker at United, and the Danish forward has already overtaken Zirkzee’s goal tally.
United’s £36m summer signing has failed to score since netting on his debut against Fulham back in August.
Zirkzee has been linked with a United exit just weeks after joining due to his early struggles at the club.
The 23-year-old was given another chance to lead the line by Van Nistelrooy on Wednesday evening, but he failed to etch his name onto the scoresheet despite United’s dominance.
United are closing in on Ruben Amorim becoming the club’s new manager, but the 39-year-old will have hardly been impressed by what he saw from Zirkzee.
Man United fans slam Joshua Zirkzee performance
Overall, it was a great evening for United and their supporters, who were treated to just a second win in the last nine matches.
There were plenty of impressive performances from United’s squad, but United fans couldn’t help but point out the disappointing display of Zirkzee.
Via X, formerly known as Twitter, supporters suggested that Amorim should look to move on from the Dutch forward.

One supporter wrote: “I hope the first player they sell is Zirkzee.” While another added: “Zirkzee is not going to make it here no matter who is in charge.”
A third fan posted: “The next manager should sell Zirkzee abeg”. Another said: “Zirkzee won’t last more than this season”.
After Zirkzee’s disappointing display, fans hinted that Amorim should go after Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres…
One fan wrote: “Zirkzee is a good reason Man United should sign Viktor Gyokeres. I can’t with this guy, man. Can’t be missing those chances.”
Speaking about Gyokeres, another said: “Need a swap deal for Zirkzee in January. Bring him Amorim”.
