Phil Jones singled out one Manchester United star after Ruben Amorim’s men suffered a shock 3-2 Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Ruben Amorim watched on as Manchester United suffered back-to-back Premier League defeats in the same week, with the Red Devils dropping valuable points.
United were beaten 2-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates on Wednesday evening before Nottingham Forest’s visit to Old Trafford on the weekend.
Forest pounced in the second minute from a corner and Nikola Milenkovic powered home a header past Andre Onana to put his side 1-0 up.
Rasmus Hojlund then cancelled out Nikola Milenkovic’s opener and both United and Forest went into half-time with the scoreline level.
However, Andre Onana was then a fault only two minutes into the second half after his howler allowed Morgan Gibbs-White’s long-range strike to squeeze past him.
The 28-year-old ex-Ajax and Inter Milan star suffered another nightmare moment after a mix-up with Lisandro Martinez allowed Chris Wood to score Forest’s third.
Bruno Fernandes pulled one back for United in the second half and the Red Devils were left chasing the match at Old Trafford.
However, Amorim’s men were unable to climb back into the contest and Forest sealed a sensational 3-2 win over the Red Devils.
Jones on Man Utd star vs Forest
Speaking on Sky Sports, ex-Manchester United star Phil Jones insisted that Andre Onana would be “disappointed” with his mistake against Morgan Gibbs-White.
Andre Onana has impressed in the 2024-25 campaign and the Cameroonian shot-stopper is leading the race for the Premier League Golden Glove award this season.
Jones praised the Cameroon international for being “terrific so far this season,” despite the “mistake” that he made against Nottingham Forest.
“He will be disappointed with that,” he said.
“When we watch it back, it’s not a great watch. I’d like to give him a bit of credit and say the ball is deviating but it’s hardly one of the knuckle balls. He should be saving it.
“I think what you would say is that he’s made a mistake there but he’s been terrific so far this season.”
Amorim reflects on Man Utd vs Forest
Speaking after the match, Ruben Amorim admitted that United “started really badly” and the Red Devils experienced a “really tough” contest against Forest.
“It was a really tough game,” he said.
“We started really badly. The first play, we suffered a goal. They scored in difficult moments for us so it was difficult to pass on to the players the job we have to do.
“We controlled the game and created some chances and then we tried to work something for the second half.
“When we suffer two goals like that, it’s really hard in this context to help the players, to put some calm into the players.
“They try it until the end, with not a lot quality, more heart than quality, but we couldn’t do it, [get] another goal to gain at least a point.”
