Rio Ferdinand and Gareth Bale were both left in stitches at the idea of one Manchester United legend trying to compete in one sport.
Gareth Bale called it time on his remarkable playing career in 2023 and enjoyed incredible success during his time at Real Madrid.
The 35-year-old Welsh former winger was linked with Manchester United during his time at Tottenham, with Bale making a real name for himself at Spurs.
However, Bale left Tottenham in 2013 and completed a blockbuster move to Real Madrid, with Los Blancos paying a world-record fee at the time of £85m.
During his time in the Spanish capital, the former Spurs ace lifted three La Liga titles, five Champions League trophies and a Copa del Rey with Madrid.
Bale returned to Spurs for a brief loan spell during his time at Madrid before he made his exit from Los Blancos in 2022.
The former Madrid star saw out the remainder of his career with a brief spell at MLS outfit Los Angeles FC after signing for the US-based club in 2022.
Ferdinand and Bale talk Man Utd legend
Speaking on TNT Sports, Rio Ferdinand crossed paths with Gareth Bale and the Manchester United legend asked the former Tottenham star a series of questions.
Golfing is one of Bale’s passions and the ex-Wales and Madrid star was criticised for his deep interest in the sport during his spell at Los Blancos.
Ferdinand asked Bale which footballer he would want to play against in a four-ball round match and the Welshman picked out ex-Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Let’s go [with] Cristiano Ronaldo. It’d be funny to see,” Bale said.
Responding to Bale, Ferdinand added: “Oh, that’s one thing I don’t think he can do is play golf.”
Sir Alex Ferguson wanted Bale at Man Utd
Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was an admirer of Bale and the Scotsman was keen to bring the former winger to Old Trafford when he was at Spurs.
Patrice Evra claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Madrid and land Bale from Tottenham before he retired in 2013.
“You know, you talk about the hardest moments [in my United career], I would say maybe this is the one,” he told the UTD Podcast, as per Manchester United’s official website in 2020.
“Two weeks before that, I remember there was a lot of media saying Ferguson will maybe retire next year, and he said, ‘Patrice, I will never retire. I will be here another 10 years.’
“He then said: ‘My target is I’m 99 per cent sure we will have Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale. I just need these two players to win the Champions League again. Ninety-nine per cent.’
“And to be fair, when I speak with Cristiano, I ask him and he said yes to the boss, and was coming to join United. He told me this.”
