Report: Ruben Amorim decision on exciting Manchester United teenager sparks confusion around Carrington

Manchester United named a host of young players on the bench against Tottenham Hotspur but only one talent was given an opportunity.

Manchester United lost 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon as Ruben Amorim suffered another defeat.

United conceded a soft opening goal and didn’t have the quality in the final third to get back into the game.

We can understand criticism coming Amorim’s way but his situation ahead of the game was hardly ideal.

Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer all missed out, Christian Eriksen was out ill and Amad confirmed a season-ending injury.

United’s squad was decimated for the trip to North London and that left Amorim with no choice but to fill his bench with youngsters.

Surprise around Manchester United talent

Just one player on the United bench at Tottenham was over 20 – defender Victor Lindelof.

Amorim handed Chido Obi his Premier League debut but he was the only talent to come off the bench.

Harry Amass, Sekou Kone, Elyh Harrison, Tyler Fredricson, Jack Fletcher, Jack Moorhouse and new signing Ayden Heaven were all unused substitutes.

There was no sign of James Scanlon in the squad despite an expectation that he would be included.

Reports suggested that Scanlon was being considered by Amorim as he looked at United’s top prospects.

Scanlon was not on the bench though and the Daily Mail claim that Scanlon was in contention but a late decision saw him join up with the Under-21’s instead.

It’s noted that sources around Carrington are ‘confused’ as to why Scanlon has been overlooked in favour of other youngsters.

Scanlon will hope for chances moving forward, but missing out on a place in the squad against Tottenham will sting with so many players out of action.

James Scanlon record this season

Obi has been making waves with his goalscoring prowess in the United ranks but Scanlon has been outstanding too.

The left winger has racked up 10 goals and four assists in 11 Under-18 Premier League games for United this season.

Scanlon smashed four goals against Blackburn Rovers in September as he continues to make a huge impact.

Already a Gibraltar international, Scanlon has a big future ahead of him and we would hope that it’s with United.

There are no indications that Scanlon would want to leave United for first-team pathways elsewhere, but United must be wary having recently raided Arsenal for Obi and Heaven in similar circumstances.
