'Here we go': Gary Neville shares reaction to new Manchester United stadium plans, has one 'non-negotiable'

Gary Neville played an important role in the planning of Manchester United’s new stadium.

The club legend is heavily involved in various development projects, owning Hotel Football and also his own university University Academy 92.

Gary Neville’s life after football has also seen him found The Overlap and become one of the nations biggest voices on the game.

Now, as Manchester United’s biggest infrastructure project in history takes shape, it was fitting the Mancunian would be firmly involved alongside Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

United announced on Tuesday the gigantic plans to replace Old Trafford, a stadium which will dwarf any others in the nation with a completely unique look which adds to the skyline of Manchester.

Before being announced, Neville admitted the plans for the ‘New Trafford’ had blown him away, now he has released a statement.

Gary Neville shares verdict on new Manchester United stadium

The new Manchester United stadium will be a 100,000-seater, breaking the record for attendance in England which Man City previously held.

After the announcement, Neville took to Instagram with a message, explaining his delight that United are finally progressing with plans for a new stadium, with elite facilities non-negotiable for this club.

“Well, I’ve been harping on about the stadium for years now. My honest view with United is that it’s non-negotiable that we should have the best stadium in the world and the best training ground.

“We know football always moves in cycles and you can never guarantee success on the pitch, but we hope that that returns quickly. However, it’s always in the control of the owners of the club to be the best in class when it comes to where we play football and train.

“I’ve really enjoyed being on the task force and when we were presented with the vision in our last meeting on Friday my initial feeling was ‘Here we go’.

“There’s a lot of work to do on and off the pitch to make the stadium happen but if what we are looking at today and in this video are delivered then Manchester United will be back where it belongs when it comes to its stadium and ground.

“The task force is now closed and I hope the club can get this project away as quickly as possible and get 100,000 United fans in that stadium with hopefully a successful team on the pitch.”

Neville has long been of the opinion that United deserve a better stadium and training ground and under Ineos, this is becoming a real possibility.

Gary Neville has long pushed for new Manchester United stadium

For all the criticisms about Ratcliffe, his vision for the future of United is definitely ambitious. The new stadium for United is something long overdue which Neville previously referred to as being a win-win.

In August, Neville spoke on Sky Sports of his frustrations that a new stadium was yet to be put into development.

“I was starting to tear my hair out whinging about the same stuff about the lack of stadium vision, the lack of a training ground.”

Old Trafford will forever hold history and memories, but it was behind the times and with this stadium, United can once again be a leader in Europe.

It is very exciting…
