Kobbie Mainoo and Man Utd ‘stance’ over new contract talks, it’s ‘really strange’ situation for both sides

Manchester United and Kobbie Mainoo’s camp are both at an interesting stage over the long-term future of the England star at Old Trafford, according to reports.

Kobbie Mainoo became a key player at Manchester United in the 2023-24 Premier League campaign after emerging in the Red Devils first team under Erik ten Hag.

Climbing out of the United youth academy, the 19-year-old Stockport-born midfielder became a crucial midfield influence for former Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag.

Mainoo’s superb run of form last season earned him widespread praise and even led to the United star securing his England debut in 2024 under Gareth Southgate.

The United youth academy product would play under former England boss Gareth Southgate at Euro 2024 in Germany last summer and impressed at the tournament.

Mainoo’s second major season at Old Trafford has been disrupted by injuries, but the England international remains a key player for United manager Ruben Amorim.

What has happened in Kobbie Mainoo’s Man Utd contract talks?

According to The Guardian, Kobbie Mainoo is ‘minded’ to turn down a new deal from Manchester United and potentially ‘seek a move abroad’ from the Red Devils.

Mainoo is under contract with United until 2027 and the Red Devils have been in talks over a new deal for the England midfielder.

It has been reported that United could be willing to sell the United star due to the benefits it would yield for the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Mainoo has been linked with Chelsea in recent months and The Guardian reports that the Red Devils value him at ‘about £70m.’

The Three Lions international’s United wages are reportedly £20,000 a week and the newspaper claims that Mainoo’s representatives ‘want to improve his wages.’

The Guardian suggested that the Mainoo camp wants his new wages to ‘reflect his role in the team’ and United still think that he ‘could still agree to improved terms.’

Where Kobbie Mainoo and Man Utd are at with a new contract

United In Focus understands that neither United nor Mainoo’s camp have outright rejected a new contract for the Red Devils midfielder.

That is according to Graeme Bailey, who revealed that both Mainoo’s representatives and United are “saying they want a deal” to happen.

Speaking exclusively to United In Focus, Graeme Bailey said: “Nothing has been rejected as such – talks are still ongoing. Both sides are saying that.

“The stance is that Mainoo’s camp are saying we want to stay but not afraid to go… United’s stance is they want him to stay but not afraid to sell!

“It’s really strange, but both sides saying they want a deal…”

Mainoo has made 25 appearances across all competitions for United in the 2024-25 campaign and he has scored once and registered an assist this season.
