Luke Shaw highlights major improvement under Ruben Amorim, 'I think this is...'

Luke Shaw has paid a huge compliment to Ruben Amorim by stressing the Manchester United head coach has quickly assembled the best squad the left-back has been part of.

After a torrid season last time out, due to injuries, Luke Shaw is aiming to have a greater impact on the pitch for Manchester United.

There was a time when Shaw was recognised as the best left-back in the world, but those days are gone, and he is now considered a wing-back option in Ruben Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation.

Shaw started the first game of the season in Amorim’s back-three alongside Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt. The trio performed well, but United suffered a 1-0 defeat against Arsenal following a howler from back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.

United are in action again when they take on Fulham on Sunday. Shaw will be in contention to start a second consecutive league match.

Luke Shaw hails Ruben Amorim

It has been a busy summer for Amorim as United welcomed four new players to the squad.

Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Diego Leon and Benjamin Sesko completed transfers to Old Trafford. All four players are expected to improve Amorim’s squad after a turbulent 2024/25 campaign.

Shaw, who is United’s longest-serving player, believes the group assembled by Amorim thus far is one of the best he has ever worked with.

“I’ve said it a lot to be honest and I’ve been here a long while now,” Shaw told ManUtd.com when asked about the current squad.

“I have been in a lot of different squads, but for me personally, I can only speak on my opinion. I think this is the best squad I’ve been involved in.

“It’s not just on the pitch but also off the pitch. I think the environment’s extremely important on what we create and [also] the atmosphere around the place.

“It’s a really happy place at the moment and credit to the new signings as well. They’ve definitely brought a lot of joy and happiness and of course for Matheus [Cunha], loudness in the squad.

“But, you know we welcome it with open arms and we’re really happy with how things are in, like we call it, an environment, and at the moment it’s good.”

Shaw reveals personal objective for 2025/26 season

Despite losing the first game of the season, Shaw remains optimistic for the season ahead.

United travel to Craven Cottage on Sunday and Shaw has revealed that his biggest personal objective is to play as much football as possible this season.

Shaw added: “I normally have different targets I set, but I think this season for me, of course going on the back of last season, how disappointing it was and the amount I played.

“I think the most important thing for me this season is to be fit for as many games as I possibly can for the team. [I want to] help the team out as much as I can. I think last year it hurt me quite a lot because I didn’t feel like I managed to do that last season.

“It was tough to take. So I think I set targets really this season to be available as much as I can and to help the team I think that’s a starting target and I think there’ll be more and more targets I set myself – especially for what we want to achieve as a team.

“But I think the main one for me at the moment is just to stay fit and give the manager options and to play me.”
