Andy Cole says he played with icon at Man Utd who was the best-ever in his position

After spending almost seven years of his playing career at Manchester United, Andy Cole played with some of the greatest players the Premier League has seen.

Andy Cole signed for Manchester United from Newcastle in a shock deal in January 1995, before going on to play in 275 matches and scoring a total of 121 goals.

The England international won multiple trophies, including five Premier League titles and the Treble in 1999.

A legend in the eyes of United fans, Cole will be forever remembered as a legend for his goalscoring ability, but he also scored the decisive goal on the final day of the 1998/99 league season against Tottenham to secure the title.

Andy Cole believes Peter Schmeichel is the best goalkeeper of all-time

The current United squad should be trying to take inspiration from former players who know what it takes to succeed at Old Trafford.

Being one of those, Cole was asked a series of questions by ESPN recently about the best players of all-time in different positions.

Just one of Cole’s former United teammates made the cut, while he opted for the legendary Diego Maradona as the greatest player of all-time.

Cole picked former United stopper Peter Schmeichel as the greatest goalkeeper to play the beautiful game, having won the famous Treble with the Dane in 1999.

Schmeichel cost United a mere £505,000 in 1991 and remained at the club until playing his last game in the Champions League final triumph over Bayern Munich.

With 180 clean sheets to his name at United, Schmeichel made a total of 398 appearances for the Red Devils.

Peter Schmeichel surprised Man Utd didn’t sign Micky van de Ven

Schmeichel has always paid close attention to United in his retirement years.

The former goalkeeper has picked out Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven for special praise and questioned why the defender was not on United’s radar, especially given they paid £35m to sign him from Wolfsburg in 2023.

Van de Ven has since made 81 appearances across all competitions for Spurs, featuring in their Europa League final win over United last May.

Schmeichel told Viaplay: “I think he’s been a revelation.

“I kind of think sometimes that a club like Manchester United or even Liverpool, the defending champions, they’re looking [for that player].

“How did they not spot this guy?! He’s a fantastic player.”
