Manchester United and England icon Wayne Rooney has dropped his powerful verdict on two of Sir Alex Ferguson’s most famous teams at Old Trafford.
Sir Alex Ferguson became the first manager in history to lead an English team to a continental treble after the Red Devils’ famed 1998-99 campaign under his watch.
Following the rise of the ‘Class of ’92’ at Manchester United, Ferguson captured the Premier League title, the Champions League trophy and the FA Cup in 1999.
Fast-forward from the remarkable achievement of the Man Utd treble winners to the 2007/08 season, where the Red Devils pulled off a memorable double trophy win.

Wayne Rooney compares Man Utd’s 2007-08 team with Sir Alex Ferguson’s treble winners amid Arsenal’s title challenge
Wayne Rooney was a key part of the famed Manchester United team that lifted the Champions League and Premier League trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2008.
The 40-year-old legendary former Man Utd striker forged a powerful attacking dynamic with Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez during the 2007-08 season.
Speaking on his podcast, Rooney shared his two cents on how Arsenal have approached their Premier League title challenge in the 2025-26 campaign.
During his remarks around the Gunners, Rooney talked up the “devastating” qualities that United’s 2007-08 and 1998-99 teams had under Ferguson.
“Yeah, no, well, a game for Arsenal, and I’ve heard over the last week, a lot of people talking about Arsenal and how they’re playing,” he said on BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show.
“I think Arsenal have been brilliant. Football is played in different ways.
“And you can have Manchester City of a few years ago, where they were absolutely incredible.
“Or, you know, United when I played there, or 1999, where we were relentless and ruthless and devastating. And Arsenal have got a good mix of a bit of everything.”
The debate around Sir Alex Ferguson’s Man Utd 2007-08 and 1998-99 teams speaks volumes about his Old Trafford legacy
Man Utd’s 2007-08 team might not have completed a continental treble like their 1998-99 counterparts, but both are inseparable for some Red Devils supporters.
Ferguson had built star-studded sides for both teams and the Red Devils oozed quality across the pitch in the 2007-08 and 1998-99 campaigns at Old Trafford.
Rooney is right to highlight the “relentless and ruthless” mentality that his former side had and why Man Utd’s 1999 treble-winning side mirrored those qualities.
The major silverware collected by both of Ferguson’s beloved teams is a testament to their enduring legacy at Old Trafford and in wider football as a whole.
