Man Utd player ratings vs Newcastle, Michael Carrick handed first loss as 3/10 player struggles

Manchester United took on Newcastle on Wednesday night, with Michael Carrick handed his first defeat.

It was a dramatic visit to St. James’ Park with the first half ending in blockbuster fashion. Newcastle went down to 10 men before scoring the opening goal.

But it lasted just three minutes as Manchester United struck back through Casemiro.

The second half saw a disjointed performance from United, which wasn’t good enough in a 2-1 defeat that raises serious questions.

Senne Lammens – 6

Relatively untroubled, but handled everything well. Couldn’t do much for either goal

Noussair Mazraoui – 5.5

Solid outing from Mazraoui, enough to earn his place ahead of Dalot.

Leny Yoro – 7

Growing into the role of being a starting centre-back, looked comfortable and composed at the back. Should have scored.

Harry Maguire – 6.5

Another good performance by Maguire, little to complain about.

Luke Shaw – 5.5

Poor game from Shaw, we’ll put it down to illness.

Casemiro – 6

Scored his sixth of the season to make up for a bad first half. Taken off for Ugarte in the 60th minute.

Kobbie Mainoo – 5

Struggled against the intensity of Newcastle’s midfield and didn’t take control of the game. Withdrawn in the 75th.

Bryan Mbeumo – 4.5

Should have scored in the first half as the ball fell to him alone in the box. Had plenty of the ball but not his best game.

Bruno Fernandes – 6

Gave away the penalty sloppily but made up for it immediately with a brilliant free-kick delivery for the equaliser. One assist closer to the record. A couple of brilliant balls into the box, which should have resulted in more goals.

Matheus Cunha – 6

Some nice moments dribbling against Kieran Trippier, needs to improve his decision-making. Didn’t do enough.

Benjamin Sesko – 5

Quiet night given United’s poor performance going forward, one chance in the box was unscorable with four defenders around him.

Diogo Dalot – 4.5

After being dropped, he won’t have convinced Carrick to change his mind with a weak cameo.

Manuel Ugarte – 7

Settled the game and looked much better. Had a real impact on the game.

Amad – 5

Quiet cameo for Amad.

Joshua Zirkzee – 6

Bright cameo, one excellent strike which forced a brilliant save.

Tyrell Malacia – 3

There’s a reason he hasn’t played all season. Terrible defending for the Newcastle winner as he was spun inside out.
