Forget the UCL, there’s a £55m boost Carrick has already given Man Utd by replacing Amorim

Champions League qualification will transform the financial situation at Man Utd, but Michael Carrick gave a £55m boost even before that was confirmed.

The gamble of sacking Ruben Amorim has aged like fine wine at Man Utd, with Michael Carrick achieving the club’s objective of qualifying for the UCL next season.

United’s financial situation needed that cash injection after two seasons out of the competition, but that’s not the only boost Carrick gave the club.

By improving United’s league position, he handed United a £55m boost compared to last season under Amorim.

Man Utd’s £55m boost driven by Michael Carrick

Man Utd finished 15th in the league last season, and somehow, even that was promised as a launchpad for future things by Amorim.

He promised that the “good days were coming”, but a defeat to Grimsby and ten-man Everton is not what a good day looks like.

The Athletic reports that last season’s disaster can be put into perspective by judging this season’s numbers.

By improving their league position from 15th last season to 3rd this year, United have seen a revenue jump of £55m from their league position alone.

The merit payments have gone up significantly by climbing 13 places, and the demand to see United live remains as strong as ever.

It has resulted in a massive financial boost due to Carrick, who took over a team that was sixth in the table, but perfectly mid-table in performance metrics, and guided them to a comfortable third place.

Carrick can solidify the boost next season

Carrick came in to do a firefighting job in an interim capacity and performed so well that he’ll permanently take charge of a rebuilt house instead of a burning one.

Going to the knockout stages of the Champions League will enhance those finances further, and if he manages that by maintaining a place in the top four in the league, then the figures will skyrocket.

If the finances for next season look rosy right now due to exploits this season, then they can be made to look pale in comparison next season.

None of this would have been possible had he not replaced Amorim mid-season.

The Portuguese manager almost begged for the sack, and when it came, he ended up helping United inadvertently.
