The decision to sell Harry Amass is making a lot of Man Utd fans enraged, but equally as concerning is the decision to keep his teammate.
Despite shining in the two pre-season games so far to build on his impressive loan spell last season, Harry Amass has one foot out the exit door.
It has been reported that Man Utd are willing to sell Amass for just £6m, and have told him he doesn’t have a future at the club.
While that is undoubtedly a reckless decision, the club’s call to keep his teammate at the club this season is equally as concerning.
Man Utd make Jack Fletcher untouchable
Of the many youngsters who played against Wrexham in the first pre-season game, Jack Fletcher had the privilege to start with the senior players in the first half.
Fletcher looked like an academy youngster among the seniors, which is not a good look, considering the seniors weren’t very good either.
In contrast, the academy XI in the second half bossed Wrexham, leaving Fletcher as the odd man out.
In the second game, he was back with the academy XI, and even though the youngsters impressed again, Jack Fletcher wasn’t one of them.
Since getting misprofiled by Amorim, Fletcher has struggled to translate his academy form to senior football.
It is due to a variety of reasons. Firstly, his best ability at the youth level, where he ghosts into the box for finishes, gets voided when he plays with footballers with high spatial awareness.
Secondly, his physicality advantage is nullified in senior football, and his technical abilities in close spaces leave a lot to be desired.
As of now, he is a goal-scoring central midfielder in 4-3-3, because he’s not defensive enough to play in the pivot, and not creative enough to play as an attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1.
Unfortunately, 4-3-3 doesn’t exist at Man Utd, so Fletcher will always have trouble meeting expectations in two roles that don’t suit his skill set.
That is why making him untouchable, along with his twin, Shea Lacey, and JJ Gabriel, is such a puzzling decision.
Fletcher needs a season on loan
Jack Fletcher, more than anyone, needs a season out on loan, preferably not in the lower leagues of English football.
He needs to hone his technical skills so he’s comfortable playing in the No. 10 position, or as a creative wide man from the right wing.
He is never going to be a good enough defensive midfielder, and it would waste his best skill set, which is his deceptive goalscoring skills.
To do that, he needs to go to a technical league instead of the physical rigours of lower league football.
What he needs the least is a season of five substitute appearances at Old Trafford, where he doesn’t look good and gets trapped in a vicious cycle.
It already happened once when he caught Man Utd fans‘ ire for looking average under Amorim. It will happen again if the first-team experiment continues.
He’s not ready, and more importantly, doesn’t have a set position in Carrick’s tactical setup.
