When Marcus Rashford left Manchester United to join Barcelona on loan, he gave an honest assessment of what had been going wrong at Manchester United.
Ruben Amorim froze Rashford out of the squad and criticised his work rate in training, but now Rashford is set to return and be reintegrated by Michael Carrick.
When Rashford returns, he can help to make the changes that he said the club has been crying out for.

Following Rashford’s move to Barcelona, he spoke to The Rest is Football about the problems at Old Trafford.
“When Ferguson was in charge, not only were there principles for the first team, but they were for the whole academy,” Rashford said.
“So you could pick players from 15 years, a full generation, and they’d all understand the principles of playing the Manchester United way.
“People say we’ve been in a transition for years. To be in a transition, you have to start the transition. So it’s like the actual transition has not started yet.
“You see it with any team that’s been successful over a period of time, they have principles that any coach that comes in, any player that comes in, has to align to these principles or be able to add to these principles.
“Whereas at times I feel like United have just been … We’re hungry to win, so we’ll always try to adapt and to sign players that fit this system. But it’s reactionary.”

Rashford is not wrong with his United criticism. For years, the club lacked a clear direction and were chasing short-term wins.
Heading into 2026/27, United are once again starting the season with a new head coach in Michael Carrick, who is taking charge of his first full season with the Red Devils.
But there is a clear difference in the club’s direction since the Ineos takeover. There is a clear transfer strategy, and sporting director Jason Wilcox is pushing his game model onto the squad.

Carrick is expected to adopt a possession-based style of play in 2026/27, a direction that United have been heading since the appointment of Ruben Amorim.
Rashford joins a much healthier sporting environment, and now is his chance to prove Amorim wrong by contributing to a winning mentality.
