Bryan Mbeumo started up front in Cameroon’s 1-1 draw against Congo in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers are well underway, with Cameroon picking up four points in their first two matches. Bryan Mbeumo is the only Manchester United player called up to the squad for the September-October international break, while Carlos Baleba prepares for his debut at Carrington.
Mbeumo went into tonight’s match against Congo after scoring in Cameroon’s 3-1 win against Comoros. Unfortunately, they were unable to make it two wins on the bounce, after coming from behind to secure a point, courtesy of an own goal.
As a result, Mbeumo was unable to score in back-to-back games, as Cameroon struggled to threaten Congo’s goalkeeper.

It wasn’t the first half Cameroon had planned as they trailed by a goal, but an own goal from Congo goalkeeper Melvin Zinga levelled the score shortly after the break.
Mbeumo was unable to have the same impact on the game he had against Comoros, often looking isolated as he led the line for Cameroon. He touched the ball 38 times and managed two shots, though one was blocked and the other was off target.
Perhaps the biggest positive from Mbeumo’s performance against Congo is that he created more chances (3) than any other player on the pitch.
The United forward played the entire match, but he will be disappointed that the indomitable Lions were unable to come away with three points. It means Cameroon have four points after two matches and sits at the top of Group G in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

United need Mbeumo to hit top form when the international break ends. There are some big matches coming up, and the pressure is on Michael Carrick to turn things around.
