Former Manchester United goalkeeper Lee Grant has emerged as a contender to replace Paul Heckinbottom as Preston manager.
Lee Grant was a third-choice goalkeeper at Manchester United for four years between 2018 and 2022, after joining the club in a deal worth around £1.5m at the age of 35.
The arrival of Grant meant United had depth behind David de Gea and Sergio Romero. His two appearances for the club came in the Carabao Cup and the Europa League. Towards the end of his spell at Old Trafford, he began completing his UEFA coaching badges, which have served him well.
Grant previously worked under Kieran McKenna as assistant manager at Ipswich Town, and he recently became Walsall head coach in League Two. The Saddlers are currently second in the league table after seven matches.
Lee Grant targeted for Preston North End job
Preston North End had a shortlist of 50 coaches after parting ways with Paul Heckinbottom.
The Championship side are 23rd in the table after eight matches, winning just one of those. Jason Euell has taken interim charge, but they’re on the lookout for a new head coach.
According to talkSPORT, among the top contenders is former United goalkeeper Grant, who has been enjoying positive results since taking charge of Walsall.
The 43-year-old had been sacked by Huddersfield Town in January of this year, but that hasn’t prevented him from getting the most out of his team at Walsall since the beginning of the season.
Other candidates mentioned in the report include Robbie Keane, Graham Alexander, Scott Parker, Sean Dyche, and Steven Gerrard.
Of course, there is a chance that Euell gets the job on a full-time basis, but that would come as a shock with multiple managers boasting greater experience now in the running for the job.
The objective for whoever takes charge of Preston will be to stay in the Championship. It remains to be seen if Grant’s tenure at Walsall will end prematurely due to a Championship offer.
