Michael Carrick followed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s route into the Manchester United job. Is he following the same way out?
It looks like Michael Carrick is speed-running through the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era at Manchester United.
- Both managers were club legends, hired on an interim basis
- After brilliant starts, they were appointed to a permanent role
- Performances dipped immediately after permanent appointment
While Solskjaer lasted from 2019 to 2021 as permanent manager, Michael Carrick might be lucky to see out his first full year.
After a run of only two wins in 11 matches in all competitions, Carrick is at serious risk of the sack, and the latest result against Como may have put him on the precipice.
Another glaring similarity to Solskjaer emerged right after the loss against Como.
Michael Carrick apologises after 4-1 defeat: Familiar?
After Manchester United’s 4-1 defeat to Como, Michael Carrick walked over the to travelling away fans to personally apologise.
If this looks familiar, it’s because it is exactly what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did after his final game, a 4-1 away defeat to Watford.
Solskjaer walked over to the away fans at Vicarage Road to apologise, perhaps suspecting he would be sacked 24 hours later.
Carrick’s intentions may be pure, simply wanting to apologise for a bad performance, but it is impossible not to see the parallels.
This was Carrick’s worst defeat as Manchester United manager, and the pressure is on.
There was one major difference between Carrick and Solskjaer’s apologies.
When Solskjaer walked over to the away fans – he had Bruno Fernandes alongside him.
Carrick stood alone in Como – with Bruno Fernandes calling out the tactics of the coaching staff in his postgame interview.
It certainly does not look good for the former Middlesbrough boss.
