Manchester United told they will have to pay over £36m to sign much-coveted 14-time international

PSV Eindhoven will demand a club-record sale for Manchester United target Cody Gakpo, says the Dutch giants’ CEO Marcel Brands.

The 23-year-old was already one of the most coveted players across Europe prior to this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.

But after scoring three goals in his maiden World Cup, Gakpo’s forever rising stock has hit a new high.

PSV’s number 11 was on Erik ten Hag’s radar during the summer transfer window, but the Red Devils interest in Gakpo cooled following the arrival of Antony from Ajax.

The Telegraph reported in the summer how Manchester United hoped to do a deal for Gakpo at £34 million.

Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure and Manchester United lacking options upfront, interest in Gakpo has seemingly been reignited ahead of next month’s January transfer window.

Ten Hag told the club’s website that the Reds will “do everything in our power” to sign a replacement for Ronaldo, and it seems that Gakpo is one of the top names on the former Ajax manager’s wish list.

But according to Fabrizio Romano, the twenty-time league champions could now have to stump up £55m to lure Gakpo away from Ruud van Nistelrooy’s PSV.

Gakpo has 13 goals and 17 assists from 24 matches for the Dutch giants this season.

But Brands believes that there is only 10 to 12 clubs that can sign Dutch football’s man of the moment next month.

While PSV are yet tor receive any bids, Everton’s former director of football said that whoever signs Gakpo will have to make the talented forward PSV’s most expensive departure.

Hirving Lozano is PSV’s record sale and Napoli paid £36m to sign the pacey Mexican in 2019.

Gakpo looks set to be sold for a lot more than what Lozano departed the Philips Stadion for.

The question is whether the Glazers are willing to give Ten Hag the required funds to sign Gakpo next month after the Red Devils spent a record amount during the summer.
