'That's over': Released Man United man still a free-agent as Prem boss rules out deal

Axel Tuanzebe is set to remain a free-agent after Premier League newcomers Luton Town walked away from a deal to sign the former Manchester United defender.

Almost two months to the day since Manchester United announced that David de Gea, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe would be departing Old Trafford upon the expiry of their contracts, none of the aforementioned trio have managed to find themselves a new club.

Now, that may not come as much of a surprise when it comes to Jones. A 27-time England international he may be, the injury-stricken centre-back has featured in only six top-flight games since the start of 2019/20 after all.

As for De Gea, if you needed any more proof that the Spaniard is an analogue goalkeeper in a digital age, you need only consider the fact that no one appears willing to take a punt on a man who still has the Premier League’s Golden Glove sitting on his mantelpiece.

Tuanzebe, at least, still has plenty of time on his side at the age of just 25. But he, like Jones, has spent more time in hospital beds than the entire cast of Casualty over the last few seasons; loan spells at Stoke City and Napoli ruined by fitness issues.

Manchester United released Axel Tuanzebe

Tuanzebe had been spending the last few weeks training with play-off winners Luton Town. But, speaking to Luton Today, Hatters boss Rob Edwards now confirmed that the Bedfordshire outfit would no longer be pursuing a deal for a player crowned Manchester United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year back in 2015.

“We weren’t quite able to agree on anything,” Edwards explains. “So that’s over.”

“He’s a good lad and a good player. And, of course, we then wish him well. But it’s like sometimes you can have any kind of list and look at targets, and sometimes it doesn’t quite work out.”

Luton to sign Teden Mengi

Edwards, however, was far more positive when quizzed about another Man United academy graduate. Luton, he says, are in ‘talks’ to sign Teden Mengi from the Old Trafford outfit.
