Ten Hag personal pledge on transfer opportunities shows why Manchester United new signings will hit jackpot

Erik ten Hag confirmed earlier this week that Manchester United are in the market for new signings, if the right fit can be found.

Speaking to the club website, Ten Hag acknowledged that United are looking for opportunities to add to the squad, with striker an area of priority after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure.

United need to find the right combination of quality and price, which is not always easy, especially in January.

Manchester United’s transfer history has not always been successful either, and it helps that Ten Hag is (a) taking a proactive approach and (b) given freedom to do so by the club, which has not always devolved power to managers.

Ten Hag personal pledge

In an interview with the club website, Ten Hag clarified that United are in the market for new signings, and that he is heavily involved: “Yes but only when we find the right player.

“We do everything that is in our power, so I do research on every opportunity that comes. We do everything we can if that opportunity will be there.”

It is fascinating to hear Ten Hag assesses each and every transfer option, at least the credible ones, and it is encouraging that he is so heavily involved.

New signings will hit the jackpot

It is clear no signing will be made without Erik ten Hag’s approval. It has not always appeared the case that previous bosses have had the same say in making signings.

This bodes well for the new signings enjoying success when they join Manchester United. They will be arriving at a club to play under a manager who believes in them, and has fought to sign them.

Ten Hag will have a clear plan for his new signings, how they will fit into his squad and his system, and any new arrival will hit the jackpot by agreeing to play for him.

The Dutchman has had a strong success rate with his signings so far. All five permanent deals look excellent; Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, Antony, and Christian Eriksen.

Even though one or two potential signings in the summer raised eyebrows among fans, had they signed, Ten Hag likely would have made their arrivals look shrewd.

Manchester United have struck gold with Ten Hag

The real ‘win’ for Manchester United was hiring Erik ten Hag in the first place. He is a manager who knows exactly what he wants, and is determined to be successful.

The manager is also willing to stand up to the board. Before agreeing to take the job, he insisted on having ‘control’ of the club’s player recruitment.

Louis van Gaal famously admitted he did not sign the players he wanted. David Moyes was not backed, while Jose Mourinho was unable to sign several of his top targets either, lumbered with players he did not believe in.

Did Ole Gunnar Solskjaer really push for Cristiano Ronaldo? Or Donny van de Beek, or Amad? There are doubts over these, and more.

Ten Hag has the power and desire to make the recruitment process a success, and it’s working so far. This is not taken for granted by United fans, after a decade of unimpressive transfer moves.
