How long is Alejandro Garnacho's Manchester United contract? Situation explained

Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho is proving to be a revelation in the first team this season.

The teenager provided an assist in the derby against City for the winning goal at the weekend, and has earned praise and even Lionel Messi comparisons in his homeland.

Now a first team regular, Garnacho has won over manager Erik ten Hag, however, terms on a new contract have not yet been agreed to reflect this.

The Independent report Garnacho still earns £7,000 per week, and his representatives are not ready to accept an offer of £20,000 per week which has been on the table, feeling he deserves more.

How long is Alejandro Garnacho’s Manchester United contract?

Alejandro Garnacho signed his first professional deal in 2021 after turning 17, a year after his move from Atletico Madrid.

This contract runs until 2024 and Manchester United have a further option to extend it until 2025.

The option is pretty much a guarantee to be taken up, so essentially Garnacho is under contract at Old Trafford for another two-and-a-half seasons.

Manchester United fans right to be anxious – but not overly so

United supporters are right to feel anxious about Garnacho’s situation. He is the most exciting attacking player to come through at the club in years, and unlike Marcus Rashford, he has no local ties to Manchester.

The Independent report Real Madrid are monitoring his situation, and the fear is that he could look to follow idol Cristiano Ronaldo’s route to the Spanish side, to play in the city where he was born.

The good news is United are in control, for now, of Garnacho’s situation. This is not a Paul Pogba scenario where he could leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Everybody connected with United would feel better if Garnacho signs longer term deal. And it’s also fair that he should probably be earning more than the proposed £20,000 per week, when there are teammates at the club who earn 10 times that.

Garnacho was recently lauded as among the best 10 young players in the world, by FourFourTwo. It will not reflect well on anybody at Old Trafford if he is allowed to leave.

One of the first orders of business from United’s new owners should be to tie Garnacho to a long term extension.
