139-touch ace praises 'world class' Manchester United teammate v Leeds

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire praised teammate David de Gea after he set a Premier League record against Leeds.

De Gea became the first non-British player to make 400 Premier League appearances for the same club.

He has a total of 519 appearances for Manchester United in all competitions, currently the 10th highest for the Red Devils of all time.

De Gea celebrated the occasion with a clean sheet as Manchester United won 2-0 at Elland Road.

Maguire praises De Gea

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was making a rare start and he resumed the armband from vice-captain Bruno Fernandes.

In his post-match interview, Maguire made a point of praising his ‘world class’ teammate.

Maguire told Sky Sports: “To play 400 games as number one for this club just shows how good he is.

“Over the years, he’s an absolute legend for the club and still is performing at the highest level.

“He’s world class and he’s proven that again this season.”

Maguire played all 90 minutes, improving in the second half after a couple of shaky moments in the first, where he did clear an effort off the line.

The centre-back had 139 touches in total, completing more passes (108) than any player on the pitch.

Asked about his own situation, Maguire said he was putting the team first and was happy to contribute.

Maguire said: “It’s not about me, it’s about the team and about the club being successful.

“Obviously I want to be a big part of it. The only thing you can do is train well and make sure you’re ready when the chance comes.”
