Nike issue Mason Greenwood statement after charges dropped against Manchester United player

Sportswear giant Nike have moved to distance themselves from Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood remains under contract to Manchester United, and saw charges against him dropped last week, by the Crown Prosecution Service, Sky News reported.

The footballer remains under suspension by Manchester United, who have launched their own investigation into the matters which led to his arrest.

Greenwood is under contract to United until 2025. He recently expressed his happiness that the charges against him have been dropped.

Nike issue statement

Mason Greenwood was a Nike athlete prior to his arrest. The company dropped Greenwood last February without paying a penny in compensation, The Mail reported.

There was confusion then when Greenwood’s Instagram bio was updated, with just nine pictures remaining, featuring goals he scored for Manchester United.

As seen below, it also made reference to the claim he was a Nike athlete. This may simply have been an oversight.

Nike have issued a statement distancing themselves from Mason Greenwood entirely.

A spokesperson told the Mirror and The Sun: “Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete.”

Greenwood has not played for Manchester United in more than a year, last appearing in January 2022.

The club are yet to make a decision on his future. The Guardian report United staff are split over what action should be taken.

A report from The Sun has claimed Greenwood has considered his options if he is sacked from his Manchester United contract, and would even consider playing in China.
