Gary Neville hails Manchester United star as man of the match after FA Cup semi-final win, disagrees with BBC

Manchester United won the FA Cup semi-final after a penalty shootout win over Brighton.

Wow. I’m not quite sure where to start after that other than to say ‘what a relief’ as instant reaction to Manchester United’s win over Brighton.

Over 120 minutes it felt like nothing was breaking for us, and the prospect of penalties was a grim one. United had lost seven of the last eight shootouts.

The most painful memory was the Villarreal loss, in which David de Gea failed to save all 11 he faced, and then missed his own.

Fortunately it did not get quite this far this time. De Gea failed to save all five before Solly March skied the sixth. It was the only way United were going to win, if Brighton missed the target.

Credit to United’s penalty takers. The Red Devils coolly dispatched all six with Victor Lindelof netting the winner.

Neville picks his man of the match

Gary Neville hailed the taker of Manchester United’s sixth penalty as his man of the match, crediting Victor Lindelof’s performance.

It was in disagreement with broadcaster BBC Sport, who named Brighton’s Moises Caicedo as man of the match.

Lindelof was part of a back-line with Luke Shaw who kept a clean sheet over 120 minutes. It was the first time he had partnered Shaw as part of a back two.

The Swede’s leadership was important, he was solid throughout, making five clearances and 11 ball recoveries, winning five duels.

But the most important statistic of all, was him burying his penalty in the net. Manchester United are heading back to Wembley to face City in the final.
