Real reason behind Manchester United star’s £50m transfer valuation goes back four years

Manchester United have slapped a £50m price tag on Scott McTominay amid interest from Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United, reports the Daily Star.

This is a classic case of ‘what goes around comes around’ following two years back when Newcastle valued Sean Longstaff at the same price when the Red Devils declared their interest.

After their takeover, it’s common knowledge that they certainly have the cash to spend, and Mctominay has been heavily linked to a move to the North East.

But is he really worth £50 million? And should United be thinking of selling him?

United want £50m for McTominay

Despite being nothing more than a squad player in Erik ten Hag‘s regime, United want £50 million for the Scotsman.

He has been in fine form as of late, scoring goals for fun for his country and popping up with a great finish to put United in front during Saturday’s Premier League game against Everton.

Scott is a necessity for United at the moment, with Casemiro suspended he is the only real holding midfielder in the first-team squad – however if Newcastle did pay up, we think ten Hag would be inclined to sell.

It would be a shame as McTominay does show immense passion and clearly has a love for the club, but that sort of cash for a squad player can’t be passed up on.

This really is comeuppance though for the Magpies, with United clearly not forgetting the ludicrous fee they placed on Sean Longstaff’s name back in 2019.

Do you think United should sell or keep Scott McTominay?
