'Too big for him': £30m captain told he is not ready to join Manchester United

A move to Premier League giants Manchester United would be ‘too big’ for Orkun Kokcu as the Feyenoord captain still has a lot to learn.

That is according to Wim Kieft, the Ajax and PSV Eindhoven legend who has seen Kokcu blossom into arguably the Eredivisie’s most complete central midfielder over the last 12 months or so.

Feyenoord’s inspirational skipper; the Dutch-born Turkey international is guiding the Rotterdam giants to only their second domestic title since the turn of the century.

And, according to 1908 – a specialist Feyenoord website with an excellent knowledge of all things at De Kuip – Kokcu’s outstanding form has caught the eye of Manchester United, Erik ten Hag casting his sights over another Netherlands-based talent.

Will Manchester United sign Feyenoord’s Orkun Kokcu?

Kieft, however, has concerns about whether the £30 million-rated Kokcu is ready for such a move. Benfica or Brighton – two clubs with a remarkable track record when it comes to helping young players realise their potential – would be a more suitable destination, he says, for a 22-year-old who still has a lot to improve upon.

“There is a lot of interest in Kokcu,” Kieft tells De Telegraaf. “But a move to the absolute top of European (football) is too big for him.

“It is better to take an intermediate step at clubs such as Benfica or Brighton Hove and Albion. (They) are also interested in him.”

Set-piece specialist Kokcu has 12 goals and four assists this season; Former Dutch star Ronald de Boer convinced that the youngster will leave Feyenoord ‘for a lot of money’.

Kieft, however, wants to see Kokcu add a more mature streak to his game.

“Orkun Kokcu is an important player for Feyenoord. He is good, but will still have to make progress,” Kieft adds. “Kokcu is always very critical of his own game. That is fine in itself, but he should not lose himself in it. He also reacts emotionally to everything. He wants to show how good he is.’

“(Kokcu) often oversteps his mark in this. That gets in his way.

“Although Real Madrid’s Luka Modric is of a different calibre, (Kokcu) should take a look at the Croat. He always plays simple, controlled and in the team’s interest.”
