Cheaper than Caicedo; Manchester United linked midfielder admits he could make £33m move

PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Sangare has confirmed the existence of a £33 million release clause in his contract amid interest from Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United.

Since taking over at Old Trafford, the former Ajax boss has made some rather excellent use of those Eredivisie connections; Lisandro Martinez, Antony and Tyrell Malacia playing key roles in United’s resurgence.

Now, with Orkun Kokcu, Jurrien Timber, Santiago Gimenez, Taylor Booth and the aforementioned Sangare all linked ahead of the summer transfer window, do not be surprised to see United jump head first into a familiar market as the second stage of the Ten Hag rebuild gets underway.

The Red Devils scouted Sangare last month, according to 90Min.

A powerful, 6ft 3ins defensive midfielder; the iron-clad Ivorian could be a potential back-up/long-term replacement for the outstanding-but-ageing Casemiro at Old Trafford. Brighton’s Moises Caicedo may be the first name on the lips of many Manchester United supporters. But, what Sangare lacks in terms of a proven track record in the Premier League, he makes up for in affordability.

Brighton demanded £90 million for Caicedo when Arsenal came calling in January. Sangare, however, would cost a mere third of that fee.

“I think that clause provides clarity for everyone, both for me and the club,” Sangare tells Voetbal International, confirming reports that his has a £33 million release clause in his PSV contract.

“If that were to be the sale price sometime in the future, I think everyone would be very happy

Sangare, who turned down Everton and Southampton in favour of PSV back in 2021, helped Ruud van Nistelrooy’s PSV beat Ajax in the Dutch Cup final on Saturday.

PSV legend Aad de Mos, meanwhile, believes the 25-year-old is ready to join one of the Premier League’s bonafide big hitters. Then again, the prospect of competing for a place with arguably the finest defensive midfielder on the planet may be a cause for concern, Sangare admitting that he will take game time into account when considering his next move.

“It is important when making a choice that I can progress. I especially want a good perspective on playing time, if I were to leave PSV,” Sangare adds. “Only if you play will you continue to develop yourself.

“Of course, it is nice to play in the Premier League or perhaps another major competition. But it is now about PSV and performing here.”
