Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has had a fall from grace. Should Manchester United still be interested?
Robert Sanchez has displaced David de Gea in the Spain set up and proven himself as a top Premier League goalkeeper for Brighton in recent seasons.
Earlier this season The Mirror reported Manchester United’s scouting team had ‘identified’ Sanchez as a future successor to David de Gea. Teamtalk had reported earlier in the year that Brighton valued him at £50 million, hoping tod deter suitors.
But over the past month Sanchez has had a remarkable fall from grace after falling out of favour, dropped for Jason Steele.
Robert Sanchez situation
Robert Sanchez started the FA Cup semi-final and kept a clean sheet against Manchester United, making one spectacular diving save from Marcus Rashford in extra-time.
But in an effort to shake things up, Roberto de Zerbi has promoted Jason Steele, and has not been impressed by Sanchez’s reaction. He was not in the squad at the weekend and has not travelled to Newcastle tonight.
The Mail quoted De Zerbi: “With Robert, we spoke before the Arsenal game and we decided together the best solution was to stay home. He decides everything. Robert decides, and at the moment, it’s like this. He wanted it this way, not me, not the club.”
Should Manchester United now move in for Sanchez
This situation is a black mark against Robert Sanchez, but it might be sensible for Manchester not to overreact to it and scrub him off the list of potential targets.
Sanchez, 25, is a Spain international who has 87 Premier League appearances, including 23 this season, in which he has conceded only 30 goals.
His contract at Brighton expires in 2025, and due to his current situation, Manchester United could sign him at a knockdown price.
Sanchez is a more well rounded goalkeeper than David de Gea, who could come in immediately and compete with his fellow Spaniard.
Having already been added to United’s shortlist, this situation could actually be the opportunity the club have been waiting for. Whether he is the best option, is unclear, but he might be one the club turn to.
