Manchester United are said to be in the market to sign an experienced striker this summer. Here are six names that we think should be considered for that signing.
This summer, Manchester United are set for a huge transfer window with a midfield revolution expected, but other positions are also on the agenda.
Laurie Whitwell has claimed United want an experienced striker, surely to help Benjamin Sesko with the workload set to come next season, with Joshua Zirkzee looking set to be sold.
There are several forwards in Europe who fit the bill. Here are six that we like the sound of.
Danny Welbeck
Probably the cheapest and most romantic option United could make to bolster the striker position this summer would be to bring Danny Welbeck back to the club.
Sold harshly by Louis van Gaal, Gary Neville has always suggested Welbeck should have been kept, and over the past decade, he would have been a brilliant back-up striker for the club.
Only 35, Welbeck could easily come in and do a job for a season or two, offering United depth and interchanging with Sesko when needed.
Michael Carrick knows Welbeck well, even admitting he is still in contact, and so it would be a very easy deal to do, costing surely no more than £10m. This season for Brighton, he has 13 goals, showing he’d be a solid addition and sure to add goals.
He’d also help the homegrown at club quota.
Serhou Guirassy
More expensive, but proven at a higher level, Serhou Guirassy would be another brilliant striker addition for United.
United will rue missing out on Guirassy for £15m two years ago, but it isn’t too late.
Guirassy has a release clause United can trigger, costing £44m, which might be doable if Zirkzee leaves for around the £30m mark.
The bad part, this season, Guirassy hasn’t been anywhere near as lethal, scoring 15 in 30 Bundesliga games and four in 10 Champions League games.
At 30, he still has more to give and would be a good addition, but expenses may put United off.
Robert Lewandowski
The best value deal on this list would be 37-year-old Robert Lewandowski, who is available for free this summer as his Barcelona contract expires.
Lewandowski has admitted regret over missing a United move in the past, and this summer could give him the chance to right this wrong.
As recently as November, United were linked with Lewandowski. It would be an interesting move as he has 17 goals this season and is one of the best of the 21st century.
On sensible wages, there wouldn’t be a better experienced striker for Sesko to learn from. This would be similar to Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Edinson Cavani joining, and we’d be all for it on a one-year deal.
Harry Kane
The most expensive of the lot this summer would be Harry Kane, but that’s for good reason as he is currently the best striker in world football.
United failed to trigger his £57m release clause in January, and now Kane would cost full price in the summer.
33 goals in 28 games in the Bundesliga, along with 13 in 12 Champions League games, Kane is on fire and could be set to win the Ballon d’Or if the next few months go to plan.
United have tried to sign Kane several times, most famously, Erik ten Hag wanted him over Rasmus Hojlund.
However, his contract expires in 2027, so Bayern may be tempted by £70m for the 32-year-old, which would be a ridiculous fee, although he may be worth every penny.
Patrik Schick
Another Bundesliga striker who might be ideal to come in and play second fiddle to Sesko would be Patrik Schick of Bayer Leverkusen.
Schick has previously called United his dream club, and his qualities and goal record is something that would benefit United massively.
He is 30 years old, and Schick is therefore the correct age profile Ineos are looking for, while he has a proven record of scoring over the years.
Schick has 19 goals this season, and this return would be more than sufficient for United. At Leverkusen, Schick isn’t always a starter, only starting 65% of league games, yet his goals speak for themselves.
