Report: Star Manchester United signed for 75m could help Red Devils land 42m ace

Manchester United are aiming to secure a move for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, as an upgrade on David de Gea.

The Manchester United goalkeeper situation is finely balanced right now. There is a ‘will he, won’t he’ scenario going on with David de Gea‘s new contract.

And even if he does sign, there is no guarantee De Gea will remain number one. Italian outlet Sport Mediaset claim Inter Milan goalkeeper is ‘one step away’ from signing for Manchester United.

Intriguingly, Manchester United could get a helping hand from Romelu Lukaku.

Andre Onana latest

If ever we needed a reminder, earlier this month Manchester United learned ‘don’t rely on Romelu Lukaku for anything’, thanks to the Belgian’s awful display in the Champions League final.

Despite this, we are back for more, because this time the favour Lukaku can do United is not dependent on his on-pitch performance.

Lukaku has won over the decision makers at Inter Milan, who are keen to re-sign him from Chelsea.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter need to sell Andre Onana to fund a move for Romelu Lukaku.

Manchester United signed Romelu Lukaku for £75 million in 2017. The club then sold him for £74 million in 2019.

Chelsea paid £97.5 million for Lukaku two years later, only for him to flop in the Premier League and be sent out on loan for the past two seasons.

Understandably, the Blues want to sell, and Inter want to buy. But the Serie A side need funds.

The report states that Inter plan to: “Take advantage of the probable collection of the transfer of Onana to Manchester United. These are hot days for this negotiation: it is the week in which the Nerazzurri expect the real offer from the English club, 50 million euros excluding bonuses, before which the deal will close.”

Inter have a cheap deal for Hugo Lloris in mind as a replacement for Onana.

Re-signing Lukaku was always going to take a sacrifice from Inter. Having sold him for almost £100 million, Chelsea were never going to give him away for free – even if they loaned him out the past two years. The time to pay up is now – and selling Onana to United looks like a viable strategy.
